Color Space Selection for JPEG Image Compression
نویسندگان
چکیده
The Joint Photographic Experts Group's image compression algorithm has been shown to be a very efficient and powerful method of compressing images. However, there is litde substantive information about which color space should be utilized when implementing the JPEG algorithm. Currendy, the JPEG algorithm is set up for use with any three component color space. The objective of this research was to determine whether or not the color space selected will significandy improve image compression capabilities. The RGB, XYZ, YIQ, CIELAB, CIELUV, and CIELAB LCh color spaces were examined and compared. Both numerical measures and psychophysical techniques were used to assess the results. The final results indicate that the device space, RGB, is the worst color space to compress images. In comparison, the nonlinear transforms of the device space, CIELAB and CIELUV, are the best color spaces to compress images. The XYZ, YIQ, and CIELAB LCh color spaces resulted in intermediate levels of compression.

Application of Reversible Denoising and Lifting Steps to LDgEb and RCT Color Space Transforms for Improved Lossless Compression
The lifting step of a reversible color space transform employed during image compression may increase the total amount of noise that has to be encoded. Previously, to alleviate this problem in the case of a simple color space transform RDgDb, we replaced transform lifting steps with reversible denoising and lifting steps (RDLS), which are lifting steps integrated with denoising filters. In this...

Given a color image that was quantized in some hidden color space (termed compression color space) during previous JPEG compression, we aim to estimate this unknown compression color space from the image. This paper develops a steganography-based paradigm for lossless-quality compression of high-resolution color images acquired by megapixel cameras. Our scheme combines space-domain and frequency-domain image processing operations where in the space domain, color-brightness separation is exploited, and in the frequency domain, spectral properties of the Fourier magnitude and phase of the color im...

JPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group) is an international standard to compress and store digital color images [5]. Given a color image that was previously JPEG-compressed in some hidden color space, we aim to estimate this unknown compression color space from the image. This knowledge is potentially useful for color image enhancement and JPEG re-compression. JPEG operates on the discrete cosi...
